Belgium
Introduction to Belgium
Belgium is one of the smallest countries in Europe. It has charming
sea-side resorts, clean beaches and beautiful cities and is full
of history and culture.
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and of the European Union;
the most popular cities are Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp.
Visitors come to Belgium from all over the world
to buy the ‘best
chocolates and beers’. Antwerp is one of the world’s
most important diamond centers and has been since the 16th century.
Belgium has a rich artistic heritage some of
the most famous art works can be found in the country’s museums and churches.
Flemish tapestry has been made in Belgium since the 14th century
and white lace making since the 16th century and are part of
Belgium’s culture. You can view one of the best lace collections
including antique pieces of lace in the Lace and Linen museum
in Kortrijk.
There are three main languages spoken in Belgium, Flemish, French
and German. In the northern half of the country Flemish is mainly
spoken and in the southern they are French speakers. There is
a small German speaking region in the east of the country known
as the Eastern Cantons.
Brussels is bilingual but French was the dominant language,
they do have their own language too, which can be heard in some
older parts of the City.
In Flanders there is not much of a problem many people speak
English here. Away from the popular tourist areas you will probably
need to try out your French unless you fancy giving French, Flemish
or Dutch a try!
Every Belgium city has at least one excellent chocolate shop
and some a few more! You can purchase chocolates from bakeries
and delicatessens also.
Belgium’s first confectionery was established
by Jean Neuhaus in 1857.
There are now three chocolate museums in Belgium, one is in
Brussels, another at Eupen and a new chocolate museum in Bruges
has opened called Choco-Story.
Belgium is well worth a visit, either for a main holiday destination
which would give you the opportunity to get to know the country
or for a short break. Even on a single city break, you will not
be disappointed with Belgian no matter how long or short your
stay.
